Saying that Players Initiative “likes” Call of Duty is an understatement. It’s pretty much one of the most popular gaming franchises, without debate. But over the years it’s continued to deviate from what made it popular in the first place, leaving it as a mediocre FPS Shooter which has resulted in backlash from fans and critics. The upcoming Call of Duty: WWII game as the name implies will take place during World War II but will it enough to undo the damage installments like Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare have done to the franchise?
How Did It Come To This?
After Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare that turned the game into a Crysis-esque space shooter, fans had reached their limits, which resulted in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare becoming the second most disliked reveal trailer on YouTube. This also led to the game having the lowest sales in the franchise. That’s 50% less than Call of Duty: Black Ops III which wasn’t that good either. So, it isn’t really that surprising for fans to be skeptical about whether Call of Duty: WWII is gonna be the same thing just in a different skin.
From what we’ve seen from Call of Duty: WWII, it does have a more “Boots On the Ground” feel and lacks all the sci-fi elements that made the past few installments so stale. Plus, adding Pink guns to a war game probably wasn’t a great idea either. The success of the nemesis Battlefield 1 coupled with the extremely bad feedback and sales, seem to have finally put Activision on the right track. But is it too late?
Can Call of Duty WWII Redeem The Franchise?
Fans of the originals that felt betrayed by the newer installments – including us – are expecting a lot from Call of Duty: WWII, and Activision doesn’t have a lot of space left to mess up at this point. The revenue that Call of Duty has brought in gives us some comfort knowing they have a few shots at getting it right, but let’s hope that we don’t have to wait any longer then WWII for our classic to return to it’s highly proclaimed plateau.
From the bits of the gameplay we’ve seen, Call of Duty: WWII does look like a grittier and more cinematic which all things considered is not a bad approach. Activision has made multiple claims saying that Call of Duty: WWII will have a more narrative driven campaign and follow a set story to add more depth to the game and the setting, rather than doing what Battlefield 1 did. Luckily, all the futuristic elements are out! Yes, even the jetpacks that developers kept shoving in our faces.
Can Call of Duty WWII save the franchise? Considering Activision is finally listening to the fans and giving them the game they want, Call of Duty WWII has all the potential and the right setting to make it a great and memorable installment in the franchise… only time will tell.
Call of Duty: WWII is expected to release on November 3 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
